How renewal works

Two choices, and they are quite different

The amount is set by LTA, not by us. What we do is handle the process and arrange financing if you would rather not pay it in one go.

5 year renewal

Half the quota premium

  • You pay 50% of the prevailing quota premium
  • Lower upfront cost
  • Allowed once only
  • The car must be deregistered when it ends
10 year renewal

The full quota premium

  • You pay 100% of the prevailing quota premium
  • Costs more upfront
  • You can renew again afterwards
  • Usually the better value per year

COE questions

What owners ask

What is the PQP?

The Prevailing Quota Premium is the moving average of recent COE prices, and it is what you pay to renew. LTA sets it and updates it after each bidding exercise. We update the figure on this page each month from the LTA website.

Should I renew for 5 years or 10 years?

A 5 year renewal costs half the quota premium, but you can only do it once and the car must be deregistered at the end. A 10 year renewal costs the full premium and can be repeated, so the car can stay on the road indefinitely. Per year, 10 years is usually the better value.

Which category is my car?

Cars up to 1600cc with no more than 130bhp are Category A. Anything larger or more powerful is Category B. Send us your car plate and we will confirm it for you.

Can I finance the renewal?

Yes. Rather than paying the whole premium at once, it can be spread over a period. The estimate on this page shows what that looks like. What you actually qualify for depends on assessment, so ask us.

Is the figure on this page exact?

It is a close estimate. It uses the quota premium for the month shown and assumes the whole amount is financed. Your exact figure depends on your car, your category and the terms you are offered.

Is it worth renewing, or should I sell?

It depends on the car and what you would replace it with. We can work out both numbers, the renewal cost and what your car would fetch today, so you can compare properly.
